CUMU 2019: Examining Mutual Benefit and Reciprocity as Core Distinctions between Engagement and Service
Tuesday, October 22nd, 2019 | 10:30am – 11:30am
Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities Conference
Jefferson Room, Loews Philadelphia Hotel, PA
Join Kristin Medlin, Emily Janke, and Kristin Norris as they present a conference session together at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities’ (CUMU) 2019 Annual Conference.
Scholar-administrators create new research and use information to help direct their administrative practice. This session will ignite a dialogue among scholars, practitioners, and administrators about the role that community partners play in community-engaged partnerships compared to public service through the lens of mutual benefit and reciprocity.
We present original research done using a new data collection system across multiple institutions that captures significant information about community engagement and public service, including the role that partners play in the partnership process. After sharing the initial findings, we will foster a conversation about how we measure mutuality and reciprocity and what that looks like when operationalized through community engagement and public service.
The session has implications for the field, practitioners, administrators, and scholars – what happens when we truly understand the role(s) that partners play in advancing common goals? How do we foster change in our communities and institutions when we examine mutuality and reciprocity in this way?
